ubuntu on the ps3

At first glance, its pretty cool to run a desktop operating system on your ps3 gaming console. Of coarse you can run ubuntu on other consoles (such as the PSP, and the Xbox for example), but what really kills it for me is how deathly slow ubuntu runs on the ps3.

On the ps3, it takes about 2 to 3 minutes to boot up. After logging in, it takes about 30 seconds to get into gnome (i dont know how well kde works on it, it probably goes slower because of all the stuff kde features).

Another thing that really kills it for me is the fact that i cant get any OpenGL acceleration.  Not getting any OpenGL acceleration is what prevents people from playing games on linux. The game may run, but it will run deathly slow, or the game will not run at all. Some games give you the option to disable OpenGL acceleration, but very few do. Supertux is the only game i know of that allows you to disable openGL acceleration.

Aside from that, the ps3 only has 256 mb ram and thats the bare minimum requirement for ubuntu, so after ubuntus finished loading, you only have about 2 to 4 mb ram left (at most).

So you may just try using YDL instead. YDL is more optimized for the playstation then ubuntu is.

  1. I thought you hated Ubuntu now that you’ve tried Mint! You should tweak your own version of Mint to be able to run it on the PS3.

  2. you cant install mint on the ps3 because mint doesnt include kboot and it doesnt support (by default) the ppc architecture (which is what the ibm cell processor is).

maybe they will release a ppc version hopefully. If they do that, then i may be able to install mint via synaptic from the cd rom.

  3. Having tried Ubuntu on my PS3 and with many failed installations (stuck at 5xx by 4xx resolution on HDTV, freezes at startup, etc), I don’t think it was meant to be just yet. I haven’t gotten around to using YDL but I’ll try when I get the chance.

  4. well they have versions of YDL built specifically for the ps3 (to my knowledge thats all there compiling YDL for now). Ubuntu is just basically the pc version with the lInux cell kernel (ofcoarse all the software loaded is linux cell compatible)

  5. Of course its gonna lag. It takes like 5 minutes to run any bootable OS on the Xbox. Knoppix takes like 5 minutes. Usually because it wasn’t made to handle anything other than what the console needs support on. So it’s no wonder ther’s a wait. Besides that, 3 minutes isn’t long.

  6. yea, i wouldn’t want to try Ubuntu on my ps3, so how fast is the xbox, or just like the ps3 is it still a bunch of crap… I think i will just stick to playing the normal games on the systems, instead of putting Ubuntu, or anything else on them.

they have ubuntu 7.10 optimized for the ps3 now.

The PS3 is more powerful then the xbox. The Xbox only features a dual core processor where the ps3 features a 8 core (with 7 active cores).

I believe the Xbox is only a 32 or 64 bit arch where the ps3 is a ppc arch.
